Q&A: Where did "married monograms" come from?

I went to purchase a wedding gift and on the registry were bar glasses with the monogram as follows: groom’s first initial to the left, groom’s last initial in the center, bride’s first initial to the right. I’ve been buying wedding gifts for 20 years. Where did this come from? What happened to groom’s monogram on barware & bride’s on linens? Does ANYONE listen to Miss Manners any more? And to be completely practical, how useful are these glasses going to be when the divorce rate is at least 50%?
